Drumset Lessons & Snare Drum Lessons
Jeanette's primary instrument is the drumset. Her approach to teaching the drumset is, to help the student find their own musical voice. She feels strongly that the student learns how to play the music that they want to play on the drumset. Her approach to this is simple. She works with recordings of songs that her students would like to learn to play by transcribing the drum part off of the recording, breaking it down into sections that become exercises for the drumset. In this way not only is the student learning to play the drumset but is also learning the mechanics of the drumset itself.
The snare drum is one of the main components of many percussion set ups, especially the drumset. Any percussionist and or drumset player who is serious about being a drummer and or percussionist will have to develop their abilities on snare drum. Jeanette's approach to teaching the snare drum is to give her students an in depth understanding of the drum rudiments, both basic and advanced. She also focuses on hand technique that she learned from Richard Wilson who is known for the "Wilson Grip" that was written up in Modern Drummer magazine.

Tabla Lessons
Jeanette has been studying Tabla since 2018 with Doug Scheuerell in Eugene who studied with master tabla player, Swapan Chaudhuri. The tabla are traditional drums from Northern India. They are used extensively in Indian Classical music as well as Jazz and fusion music. Tabla is learned using unique spoken syllables, called bols, that represent the strokes on the drum. The tabla is a wonderful journey into a beautiful mix of melody and rhythms.
Frame Drums & Cajon
Frame drums are found all over the world and represent many musical cultures. Basically the frame drum's shell is anywhere from 2-5 inches and the head can vary from 6 to 20 inches. An exceptional example of the frame drum can be heard and seen here by Glen Velez in two videos. This video shows Mr. Velez holding the drum on his lap, while this video shows him holding the drum from underneath. Like tabla, the frame drum utilizes mostly fingers and like the tabla uses syllables for each of the strokes.
The cajon, which is Spanish for box or crate, is a box like drum that the drummer sits on and plays generally with their hands, although the feet are sometimes used. The cajon is originally from Peru and while traditionally is played in Afro-Peruvian music, it has become a very popular percussion instrument in world fusion, rock and or jazz. You can hear this instrument here played by Melissa Lavergne.
